Description
The German Shepherd is a strong, agile, well muscled animal, that is both alert and full of life. They are well proportioned, protective, loyal, intelligent, and a hard-working breed.


Size
An adult male German Shepherd is 24-26 inches tall and the female is 22-24 inches tall. They weigh about 77-85 pounds.


Coat
The German Shepherd has a double coat, with a harsh, dense outer coat that protects the dog from the elements, and a wooly undercoat.


Color
There are several standard colors of the German Shepherd. These include; black, black & cream, black & red, black & silver, black & tan, blue, gray, liver, sable and white.


Temperament
German Shepherds are alert, eager, and fearless. They are also cheerful, obedient and eager to learn. Their most notable qualities are loyalty and courage.


Care
A quick daily brushing is required to keep excess hair from becoming a problem. This breed has a thick, water-repellent outer coat that helps keep the inner coat and the dog's skin from getting too wet or too dirty.


Exercise
German Shepherds love activity and training. They should get a good amount of exercise to prevent this breed from getting restless and destructive. Daily brisk walks or jogging along side is a good idea.


Training
They have a high learning ability as they are very intelligent. They are the number one choice for law enforcement agencies and the armed forces.


Shedding
This breed sheds a little constantly and is a seasonally heavy shedder.


Allergies
German Shepherd are prone to some allergies including flea allergies.


Barking & Howling
They are not big barks, but will bark if they find it necessary.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for German Shepherd can live around 13 years.


Health
Some potential health problems include hip and elbow dysplasia. Others problems include blood disorders, digestive problems and epilepsy.
